Friends and Family of Michael Metheny
Southeastern Oklahoma State head baseball coach Mike Metheny took over the reins of the program prior to the 1981 season and has continued to make them a dominant force on the diamond ever since, posting more that 1,300 wins to become the active wins leader among Division II coaches.
His connection with SOSU has spanned more than 40 years from his beginnings as a player, through being a graduate assistant, an assistant coach and eventually head coach.
During the 2016 season he became the third coach at DII and the 21st coach in any division to reach 1,300 wins. He is the 10th coach at any division to tally all of those wins at one school.
In 2006, Metheny became the 42nd coach at any NCAA division to reach the 1,000 win plateau..
He is one of 12 Division II coaches to ever reach the 1,000 win plateau, and one of just three that are still active. At the start of the 2014 season he also assumed the top spot among active D-II coaches in victories and is 13th in winning percentage.
Metheny guided the SE baseball program through its successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, and in just the second season at the D-II level he led his squad to the NCAA Division II World Series in Montgomery, Ala., and on June 3, 2000, SOSU earned its first National Championship. His title earned him the 2000 National Coach of the Year honor at the American Baseball Coaches Convention.
While a member of the NAIA, his teams made seven trips to the NAIA World Series and earned three runner-up finishes. His teams have claimed 15 conference championships and he earned conference coach of the year honors nine times and regional coach of the year seven times.
In January of 1999, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame while at the American Baseball Coaches Convention in Atlanta, Ga. He also joined the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
